Steve Slaton is my my favorite radio D.J. of all time! He was recently let go from KZOK radio as a victim of this lousy economy. When you relocate please let me know where you are and I will be a faithful listener. I have grown up with your killer classic rock and roll stories and various attributes. Your “Breakfast with the Beatles” was incredible! It will not be the same without you! I anxiously await news that you are back o the air!

I wrote him a song and sent him the cd a few years back called “I’m alive”. I have reprinted the lyrics for you here is a nostalgic look back at you rock and roll delivery. I also got to see his broadcast live at some bar in downtown Tacoma in 2002 when Paul McCartney was doing his “Driving Rain” tour at the Tacoma dome. He is awesome and my friend! I will find him broadcasting somewhere and listen to him for days! he is a rock scholar and amazing dude!

I traveled to England twice to see The Beatles sacred stomping grounds. The first time was in 1992 where I stayed about 21 days, 3 of the in Paris though. I spent 10 days in Liverpool and the rest in London which I loved so much that I went back for another 9 days in 1997, I love Abby Road and sniffing that Beatle air! Really! In fact Micheal Moore is going to put me in his movie “Sicko” and use footage of me walking on my hands across Abby Road in 1997, and falling down, dislocating my shoulder, but receiving FREE medical attention through their International health care plan. So look for me in Hollywood soon, or at least on the big screen!

Romain E. Helke was my best friend for some 3 decades. He was a talented and brilliant man, and the world is not quite the same without him in it! May he rest in peace!

Romain basically drank and smoked himself to death. A very tragic way to go. The last time I saw him was June of 2008 when we went to see the Paul Rogers concert at the casino. I had just started dating my soul mate, Miriam, and showed him a pile of pictures from our ocean shores vacation. I was anxious to have him meet her. I continued to call and email but there was no response at all for a good year and half. I think his health was getting the best of him. He always was a very private man.

I went to see a mutual friend, Jeff Glander, and told of this dilemma. He informed me that He had some heart surgery and had a pacemaker or something similar installed. He said he wanted to get with me but was not really seeing anybody. Jeff told me to send him an mail which I did more than once. I continued to reach out, but to no avail. I never did get any response back from him. I was quite bummed. He was, and still is, a very important part of my life. The very best friend a guy could every have! Really!

Just this last Saturday I got a call from Jeff. The bad news was that on Monday, October 16th, Ro passed out on his kitchen floor by a heart attack. He never made it to work and he has good work ethic. His boss was suspicious and went to his home in Auburn and found him lying face down in the kitchen.

I will attending the Memorial Service at Forest Lawn in Lacey this Wednesday, October 23, 2009 at 10pm. I am very bummed about this. I would have liked to have said good bye at least! It is weird, because the day before I heard the news we were watching video of Romain and myself playing music and being silly. It was sort of a psychic connection. This happens to me when people a admire and value die. Somehow I am able to pick up on their energy.

We were literally best friends for 29 years. I met him at The Living Water church back in 1980. We became room mates and then maintained a great friendship for almost 3 decades. He was my best friend, no doubt about it. Period!

We had a ton of things in common. We never seemed to miss a Seahawk game. We went to California 1991 in my van and saw Disneyland, Universal Studios, and The San Diego Zoo. We even went into Tijuana and partied our butts off. I videotaped about 4 hours of that trip, and I still have the tapes! Fun trip.

Ro bought a boat with his friend Jeff. For about ten years we took many fun trips to Lake Chelan, where we camped on the docks and watched dvd concerts until midnight. WE also went to Lake Washington many times, Summit lake, Black Lake, and Puget Sound too many times to count. I was proud to be the “First Mate”. I guess I was Gilligan and He was The Skipper! I have many pictures and fond memories of these times with him.

We went to see Paul McCartney at the Key Arena on November 3, 2005. This was an incredible show, and there is no one I would have rather attended this event with in the entire world. We both LOVE McCartney, and had a blast! We also saw Travis Tritt at the Puyallup Fair, and Paul Rogers at the Casino, Tammy Wynett, among other incredible events.

When he moved to Tacoma, we never missed a Seahawks game. We alternated hosting each other every Sunday, and even caught several games live at the Kingdome, and Husky stadium when they played there for a season. When he moved to Auburn for work purposes, our visits became less frequent because of nasty traffic and long distances, but we maintained communication over the phone and by emails and stuff. I always made time to get up to Auburn for the 5 pm games, and we never missed a Superbowl!

Romain was King of the coupon! We loved to save money on 2 for 1 meals, and did so often. It was also a game to see how much cash rewards we could make off our credit cards. Never more than a couple hundred dollars, but we had fun doing it! He taught a lot of cool things.

We both loved music. Especially the Beatles, and most of all Paul McCartney. We would bring our guitars up to Seattle and play at the water parks for anyone passing by. We both enjoyed live concerts on of our favorite bands, and often copied each others acquisitions onto video tape or dvd. Ro had a great voice and was a good songwriter as well. I always admired his love of music, and shared it right back with him.

So I lost my best friend, and it hurts! I still have the memories, many videos, and pictures. I wish we had a proper goodbye. I can see why he never returned my calls this last year and half. He was private man, and a very sick one. I wish I could have been there to call 911 and somehow prevent this tragedy. I miss him very much. “Let it be” by The the Beatles was always his favorite song. We even did a 4 track recording of it and made a cool lip sync MTV style video of it. When that song comes on the airwaves I always think of him. His memory will live on, but somehow I feel like I have lost very big part of myself along the way. It is hard to let Him go, but without choice in the matter I will have to move along and “Let it Be”…..

I look forward to seeing him in the sky someday!

Update******************

The memorial was great! I was able to connect with a bunch of my friends from the old days including the Thompsons. My old friend, Paul, with whom I had lost touch with, played an original song that Romain had written decades ago and told some great stories. I touched base with his parents and offered my condolences, and his His Sister Dawn, and His brother Richard gave great eulogy’s that were personal and very easy to relate to. They mentioned His love of boating, music, and food! They had a wonderful power point tribute with fitting Beatles and Paul McCartney music as a background to some nostalgic pictures of my buddy Ro. Jeff and Beth Glander were there, as well as Greg Crawford and others that wanted to pay respect for Romain. I was asked to sort of MC the friends statements and bring the microphone around to all the guests to share fitting memories of a wonderful man. A few tears were shed and we all went home with sweet memories.

In fact, just last night I had a vivid dream that I was on vacation with Romain in a cabin on some lake somewhere, somehow. I wold Him that everyone thought he was dead and I was so happy to see we were wrong and that He was still alive. This seemed so real to me, that really do believe our spirits were together once again to share a moment or two. When I awoke though, I realized i had been sleeping, but somehow a cool breeze hit me just right, and I felt like there was something to this encounter. Perhaps a message for us all to let His loved ones know that all is well, and things will be alright. I believe that too! Long live “Rocking Ro”. His memory WILL endure.

Moore’s Movie “Sicko” Spotlights Olympia Man (Eric Turnbow)
By Breanne Coates (Originaly Published June 28, 2007)

OLYMPIA — When Eric “E.T.” Turnbow of Olympia videotaped himself doing a handstand on London’s Abbey Road in 1997, it had two unintended consequences: a fall that landed him in the hospital, and a role in director Michael Moore’s new movie, “Sicko.”

Turnbow, now 46, dislocated his shoulder and thought the resulting medical costs would ruin his vacation. He was surprised that during his hospital stay, which lasted several hours, he had to pay only for his medication. The cost was 5 pounds, the equivalent of less than $10 at the time.

“Sicko” will be in theaters Friday, including the Regal Martin Village 16 in Lacey. The film, Moore’s first since “Fahrenheit 9/11″ in 2004, is a documentary aimed at highlighting the faults of the U.S. health care system.

Turnbow said his London experience is used as a bridge for Moore to go from North America to Europe in the film. He said Moore goes to England to see if health care there is really that inexpensive.

Turnbow never talked directly to Moore during filming but said that at a premiere of “Sicko” June 14 in Seattle, Moore recognized him immediately and mouthed “thank you.”

“(Moore’s) sister (Anne Moore) made the comment, ‘You are the one that provided some comic relief in the middle of our little picture,’ ” Turnbow said about the premiere.

Turnbow, a guitarist, singer and karaoke disc jockey, said he has been entertaining people since grade school. The passionate Beatles fan — his house is adorned with artifacts featuring the band — was in London to visit the place where The Beatles recorded. He was filming himself on the stretch of road immortalized on the cover of the Beatles album “Abbey Road” when he fell.

He said about Moore, “I believe what he stands for. He’s kind of a rebel, and I’m kind of a rebel as well.”

He agrees with Moore’s stance about socialized medicine.

“What they need to do is take the profit factor out of medicine,” Turnbow said.

Turnbow works nights as a DJ at the Viking Lounge in Lacey and owns E.T.’s Cosmic Karaoke. He said he surfs the Web as a hobby and subscribes to Moore’s e-mail list.

Picked from 25,000

Moore had sent a message to his e-mail group asking for medical-treatment stories. Turnbow said Moore picked his response from about 25,000.

In his message to Moore, Turnbow mentioned his short experience with England’s socialized health care.

“(Moore) just thought the thing on Abbey Road was funny,” Turnbow said. “I don’t mind a good laugh at my expense. I was honored to be a part of it.”

After dozens of phone calls with Moore’s assistants and turning over evidence to show his story was true, Turnbow received notification about a month ago that his story made it into the movie.

Moore’s assistants sifted through four hours of Turnbow’s vacation footage and compiled a piece about two minutes long. Turnbow said it includes his arrival in London, singing an original song with a friend, the soon-to-be-famous fall and him on medication.

Turnbow took his sister, Katherine Peil, to the premiere. Other family members plan to see his big-screen debut Friday.

“It’s fun,” said his mother, Jean. “Not everyone walks on their hands on Abbey Road.”

Besides VIP passes to the Seattle premiere, Turnbow did not receive compensation.

“I didn’t ask for any money because I’m in it for the cause and to be immortalized,” he said.

This is my personal blog about meeting Mr. Michael Moore, and seeing the movie “Sicko” for the first time

Everyone is full of congrats and affection about this lucky break I caught and the “15 minutes of fame” I will receive by actually making it into the Micheal Moore movie “Sicko”. I am very excited and quite passionate about this subject. My part is just a small segway that moves the story from Canada and it’s health care system, over to England and its Universal care which I was able to use in great way while vacationing there in London some 10 years ago. So here is a journal of my proud day at the Movie Premier last Thursday, June 14th in Seattle when I got a rare chance to meet Micheal Moore and see his innovative and eye opening documentary “Sicko”…..

Also visit Micheal’s ever changing website. It is loaded with cool stuff.
READ MORE …. http://www.michaelmoore.com/

First off, they called from Hollywood and invited me to go just one day before the event. I was asked to RSVP, so i cleared my schedule asap, hired someone to fill in for me at The Viking and choose a “guest” to come along and share this cool moment with me. My sister Katherine had emailed me offering to go if it came up. In fact she was the only one with the exception of her son that showed any interest, of driving so far just to see a movie. It also helps that she lives in Seattle! Duh! So I asked her and she said yes. Very cool.

We were to meet at the venue by the Paramount just off Pine street called “AMC Pacific cinemas”, which was on the 4th floor of a shopping mall. My sis wanted to buy me lunch, so we were to meet at 5pm giving us over an hour before we needed to check in with Micheal Moore’s crew. I Left Olympia around 3:42, and with a little traffic hassle here and there I actually arrived at the theater by 5:07pm! I did not make even one wrong turn and landed in the parking garage in the same building as the theater! Katherine was stuck in traffic, but arrived within a half hour. We had Delicious margaritas, and a chicken casadea at a little Mexican bar a small walk away from the venue. Yummy.

So we checked in as VIP’s, and were escorted to a roped off section of the screening room and sat with the PRESS. Micheal Moore arrived with his sister Anne Moore, who greeted me and said “You are the one that provided some much needed comic relief in the middle of our little picture, Thank You”. And that was coming from one of the producers! Micheal greeted the crowd and announced he would have a question and answer session after the film. Then he took his seat about 3 feet from us, directly in front of me, down 2 rows. When they brought him a tray of movie food, he said “Wow, so you feeding me? Are all the food groups represented here?” Between you and me, it was just popcorn and soda, the usual crap I always avoid at the movies. No apples.

So we watched the flick. I loved it! I say, just go and see it. I do not want to spoil it for you! I will say that my part arrives about half way through the film. Micheal plowed through 4 hours of my vacation videos, and carefully edited them down for this transitional time in the movie. They included:

The Plane ride

Singing a-Capella original song “Oh England” at the London Hotel with my traveling partner.

Sitting on the steps of the legendary “Abby Road Studios” where the Beatles recorded the bulk of their work. I was shooting the cover art for my debut album “I’m Alive”, which was released in 1998.

My famous fall on Abby Road where I was walking on my hands for the unique photo opportunity.

Waking up in the Hospital after having my shoulder pushed back into place by English medics.

Enjoying my “Less than $10″ medication that came along with me FREE MEDICAL SERVICE!

Micheal makes the comment that I had to enjoy London “My own way”. He then proceeds to go to England to see if what I say is true about the meds and the FREE health care!

If you watch the entire credits, my name appears in alphabetical order, just above Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam fame!

So after the movie He addressed the crowd for about a half hour. The first thing he did was point me out by name, and I got a loud cheer of recognition. This was highlight for me! I stood up and put me hands in the air in acknowledgment and the he said something like “Eric gives Hope to all those musicians in the world out there”! So that was awesome.

On the way out of the complex I was actually recognized by several people. This was cool, since in the film I was sporting a beard, mustache, and much longer hair. All in all it was a great night, quite a highlight for a young kid like me from Olympia, Washington! Thanks Mike!

My sister Katherine seemed to enjoy herself, so I dropped her at her car and headed back to Olympia with a big smile on my face. And there you have it. Thanks everyone for your support and interest. By all means go and see this movie! It will open on June 29th, and I simply cannot wait to see it again!

This was a way too cool experience for me!
Feel free to respond to this email! I would love to hear from you! And special thanks to Micheal Moore and his camp. They were gracious and great! My sister wanted to add her two cents worth about the whole experience. So take it away.

Hi all, here’s a memento photo (although I regret that its not the personal Eric & Michael shot I’d hoped for, as they immediately whisked him out the back following the Q&A). I also want to add one little item that was omitted from Eric’s report.

When Michael Moore first entered the room with his entourage, they paused on the landing very close to our seats. As he turned to see where an aid was pointing out his seat, he immediately spotted Eric, smiled, bowed his head and mouthed the words “thank you”. It was really very sweet. It was clear that after reviewing Eric’s videos there was a real kindred connection. I’m sure he must have been tempted to tell the other part of the story as well (the peritonitis nightmare back in the US that led to his “I’m Alive!” collection), but using the same person twice would have detracted from the overall flow of what he was doing. But it is a charming clip, and Eric’s passion for music comes across as the zeal behind his “wanting to cross Abbey Road in his own special way”. So I hope he can use his 15 minutes to drum up a bit of business — as there were quite a few adoring fans that approached us afterwards (including a comely little gal originally from Olympia who I hope stops by the Viking).

As for me, I have a great deal of respect for Michael Moore and his works. Indeed, his common theme of leaders who use fear to manipulate followers shows real presence. Perhaps I might exploit my brother’s coat-tails and persuade him to do a future project.

Who would have thought that a pilgrimage to the land of the
Beatles would result in millions of people seeing one of the
most embarrassing escapades of the journey years later? Karaoke
Jock, DJ and musician Eric Turnbow certainly didn’t expect that
doing a hand stand on Abby Road (at the cross walk made infamous
by controversy over a photo of the Beatles used for their album:
“Abby Road”) would be his ticket to the proverbial 15 minutes of
fame we may all be entitled to. But as luck and misfortune would
both have it, he fell. From attempted hand stand to crashing
down on the pavement and rising again with a dislocated shoulder
was caught on film by his buddy who continued filming as Eric
began to realize that his shoulder was not quite right. Eric is
known in his family as the one who documents their events, and
so his trip to England, special as it was to him, was likewise
well documented. Included were clips of Eric: singing a-capella
“Oh England” at the London Hotel, sitting on the steps of the
legendary “Abby Road Studios”, up in the Hospital after having
my shoulder pushed back into place by English medics, and
enjoying his “less than $10″ medication, in addition to the
above mentioned fall.

Fast forward to now. Eric contacted Michael Moore with his story
and out of the tens of thousands sent in, his story was used or
at least the parts Michael Moore decided upon. Yep, Puget
Sound’s own CosmicKaraoke.com KJ E.T. is being seen in one of
the top five grossing documentaries of all time… SiCKO, in
1,200 theaters across the country. The result has been good for
Eric, getting to meet Michael More at the Seattle opening, and
being interviewed by local radio and press. He is also mentioned
now in blogs and bulletin boards on the internet. There is a
lesson in all of this for you entertainers… “fame is good.”
Eric is mentioned in the film’s credits right above Pearl Jam’s
Eddie Vedder. So now there are two ways to see E.T., catch him
live at the Viking in Lacey, or as comic relief in SiCKO at your
local theater.

RE Ken Aronson article about “Sicko”…. My responce!

This is a LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sunday, July 22, 2007 4:33 PM
From:
“Eric Turnbow (E.T.)”
To:
“Aberdeen news”

RE: Harbor man appears in Sicko…..

My name is Eric Turnbow, and I am responding to the
article you published about my involvement in the
Micheal Moore feature “Sicko”. Feel free tp print any
of this in your paper as a letter to the editor!

First of all, I would like to be known straight up
that there was no royalty or money payed out to me for
the use of any info that was included in the film
“Sicko”. I signed a waiver allowing the film makers to use any
material they needed for the movie.

I am miffed by the fact that Ken said he wanted
“Control” over the use of the song “Oh England”, that
we co-wrote together in the spirit of a
Lennon/McCartney collaboration. In fact, I came up
more than half the lyrics, and ALL the music to the
song. Therefore it is “OUR” song. A joint venture. Let
me point out that they never really used the song in
the film. There is only a 4 second clip of both of us
singing a couple bars of it “Oh England Oh, oh, Oh
England Here we go” while we were at the hotel room in
London. That is it. The actual track is about 3
minutes and 54 seconds in length! I had given Micheal
Moore a copy of my original cd “I’m Alive” and
released all rights to him should he be able to use
any of it in the film, and he chose not to use the
tracks.

I would also point out that I, Eric Turnbow own 100%
of the copy write to this album. I wrote 14 and a half
of the tracks and sing all of them. I have registered
all the songs with the U.S. Copy write Office. Ken
chose not to pay for his half of the one song he
contributed to, and thus waived any rights he ever may
have had for the use of this song! Instead we made a
deal to cover his trouble where I sold him up to 100
copies of the cd at about HALF of my cost. He then
re-sold them at a profit. I financed 100 percent of
all studio time on this project and did not receive
one single penny from Mr. Aronson. I also bought the
rights from him to all the movie footage we shot of
our London and Amsterdam vacation for $40 so I own the
rights to those as well. Here isthe actual copyrite to
the “I’m Alive” cd of Eric Turnow that I am
in sole possession of! I rest my case on this issue!

Mr. Aronson does not even know who Micheal Moore is!
He knew ahead of time about this project and had
absolutely ZERO interest in it. He does not even know
how to turn on a computer, let alone surf the net, so
therefore he never could have contacted the film maker
if he even wanted to. My email was chosen from 25,000
stories, and it is a miracle it made it into the film.
Mr. Moore had a 500 hour film that he had to trim to a
mere 2 hours, yet my Abbey Road incident made the cut!
Now that is some odds. Fantastic!

I think that Mr. Aronson is being an opportunistic cry
baby about this whole incident. My screen time is 90
seconds, and his is, well about 4 seconds! Rather than
complain about not being recognized, he should be
thanking Micheal Moore, as well as Me, for including
him in this project at all. Let’s not lose sight of
the real issue here! Let’s take the focus off of any
“Credit due” and think about getting National Health
care for every American! That is what this is all
about! That is what is important. Our system sucks,
and needs an overhaul. Let’s not drop the ball and
make a big deal out of nothing at all. Ken waived his
rights to any compensation and credit. Now He may
regret the fact that he sold off any rights he never
had in the first place, So give me a break! This is
just silly!

While you are at it go and see “Sicko”. The movie
rocks and I am very proud to be a part of it! My blogs
and web pages, newspaper interviews, and KOMO radio
appearances are all over the internet and translated
into different languages and everything. It has been
awesome to be a small part of such a noble cause. It
has been great recognition for my business as well,
and you can catch my Karaoke and DJ show 7 days a week
at the Viking Lounge (6318 Martin Way…. in Lacey
Washington).

As for Ken….. well, good luck to him. He likes to
make mountains out of mole hills. His info is
incorrect and certainly inaccurate. He needs to move
on and get a life I suppose. this disgruntled attitude
will not get him very far. In the meantime, I will see
you in the movie aisles!

I would be happy to discuss with you further. I am
passionate about this subject.

Thank You

So….
Reluctantly I must publish the original story about this lame
idiot Ken who cried his way to the papers about his lack of
interest in that great movie “Sicko”…. Get a life dude. Stop
loving yourself so damn much. Get behind the cause and try
to be humble. Than maybe good fortune will come your way!

Harbor man appears in Michael Moore’s ‘SiCKO’
By Callie White - Daily World Writer
Thursday, July 12, 2007 10:54 AM PDT

Aberdeen native Ken Aronson has a passion for music
and entertainment. So it should be a dream come true
to him that he and a song he wrote are very briefly
featured in Michael Moore’s new movie “SiCKO,” a
documentary about the American healthcare system. But
the part-time karaoke jockey said he doesn’t feel he
has received his due for the part he played in the
movie.

Aronson’s story, the one told in “SiCKO,” starts
with his love of the Beatles. He and his fellow
Beatle-loving friend Eric Turnbow went together to
England in April of 1997, they did the obligatory
pilgrimage to Abbey Road, home to the studio that
recorded the seminal “Abbey Road” album. Aronson
videotaped the entire trip, starting with boarding the
plane to get there.

So, of course, Aronson caught Turnbow doing the kind
of stunt that tourists, intoxicated by being in an
unfamiliar place, sometimes attempt. He started
walking across Abbey Road on his hands.

Paul McCartney’s bare feet may have been a
“clue” to teenage conspiracy theorists back in the
day that he was dead; Turnbow, crossing the street on
his bare hands, may have thought he was about to die
when he came down, hard, putting his shoulder out of
joint.

“We knew we had to take him to a hospital,”
Aronson said. When they got there, Turnbow handed a
credit card to the staff on duty, telling them they
could charge him for healthcare.

Socialized medicine

But, Aronson said, that didn’t happen. Instead,
Turnbow got some odd looks. Because of England’s
socialized medical system, it cost Turnbow almost
nothing. In the movie, Moore contrasts that with the
American medical system.

“In the U.S., he’d have been out $2,000 at
least,” Aronson said. In Britain, Turnbow had his
arm reset for free; he was charged “three or four
pounds” for painkillers, about $6 at the time.

Aronson said the two were concerned they’d miss a
tribute concert to Buddy Holly that was only a few
hours from the time they got to the hospital.

“We were out of there fast,” Aronson said. They
didn’t miss a moment of the show, which Aronson said
was “great.”

Aronson contrasted his friend’s experience in
Britain with his here; not only has Aronson spent time
in hospital waiting rooms, he is only now going in for
surgery on his jaw and teeth, which were badly damaged
when he was hit by a vehicle while working on the side
of his house.

Song in the movie

“Before we left (for England), I came up with a
song, ‘Oh England,’ ” Aronson said. He taped the
two of them doing an acapella version, which was used
in the movie.

Aronso n is miffed that he did not control Moore’s
access to the video and song he claims are his work.

Would he feel better if his name was in the credits?

“I think so,” Aronson said. He added that he would
not mind a share of the royalties for the use of his
song.

So….. (12/30/08)

Here is a cool article about “Sicko” and Michael Moore that is in spanish! It mentions Eric Turnbow in the first paragraph. See Senior!

Here is an interesting article about my involvement in the movie “Sicko”. I like it, even if Mr. Bonk does call a “jackass”! All I can say is… well…. Touche’! I can handle it! (E.T.)

September 10, 2009
So What If It Does?
Filed under: Sicko — Brady Bonk

One of my favorite stories in Michael Moore’s Sicko is of Eric “E.T.” Turnbow, who visited London with friends with the express jackassed purpose of crossing Abbey Road on his hands. He fell, of course, and dislocated his shoulder. At the end of the day, his total medical costs came to $10 for his drugs.

A story like that makes me have to say, so what if national health care would cover non-citizens?

Objection to this notion is partially racist and partially just not getting the point.

You think Congressman Joe Wilson was all bent out of shape imagining all the Canadians sneaking across the border to take advantage of our awesome universal health care? Of course not. It’s those who live across from the other border that they’re worried about. You know. All those brown people.

Besides, this objection entirely misses the point entirely. Many of us want universal health care not just because we think it’s economically viable or because we’re rabid socialists. Many of us want universal health care because that’s the kind of god damned country we want to live in, a country where, even if you’re a jackass from a foreign land with a dislocated shoulder, the first thing you think when you get hurt or sick doesn’t have to be, “sweet Jesus, how am I going to pay?” Where care isn’t so much a commodity as it is a fundamental human right and in fact a vital link in the chain mail of our national security. When the black plague hits our shores, who do you want running the clinics? Competing, proprietary businesses? Or people you voted for?

So what if my tax dollars help somebody out who doesn’t have all his papers together? My insurance dollars accomplish that task already as things are, with ER visits ramping up costs. The point is that this debate, at least for some of us, isn’t just about money and power and politics. For some of us, it’s about what the hell kind of country we live in. I think decency dictates that you take care of folks without clicking your heels and demanding “zer papers.”

But that’s just me.

Postscript: Why Richard Simmons? I have no idea. My original intent was to put a Hitlerstache and Ronald McDonald hair on Wilson and to write “I am a penis” on him and to put a big green booger on his finger and to have him declaring that he had just farted. You know. To treat him with the same respect he’d offered the President of the United States. Then, I thought, hey. How about instead we have Richard Simmons—one of the greatest Howard Stern guests of all time—in there?

Post-Postscript: Might this be the start of a new Internet meme? “Congressman Joe Wilson and Richard Simmons?” Hmmmm…

TheBaldyMan Donating Member Journal Wed Jul-11-07 05:36 AM

Mike Moore is right about health care being free…

I was thinking about Mike Moore on the Larry King Show, lambasted for his claim that medical treatment in all those countries with universal health care was free. I heard Mike being browbeaten into silence by two reporters with a long track record of dishonesty and inaccuracy, continually loading questions and twisting claims that had already been shown to be flat out lies.

Later I was mulling this over and I had an epiphany. Mike was right - health care is free in the UK.

Sure enough here in the UK I have to pay for the British NHS with my taxes, so someone has already paid for the doctors, nurses, ancillary workers, hospitals, pharmacies etc. but it is still free health care. How can something be free if you have to pay for it? It works like this…

Say Larry King is walking down a street here in England, just as Eric Turnbow did in the movie “Sicko”, and he begins to feel faint and dizzy, he collapses to the ground. Even though Mr. King had never paid taxes here in the UK he would receive exactly the same standard of health care that any Briton would. After all if someone Mr. King’s age were to be taken poorly it would be advisable at least to get a check up by a physician. If that physician decided that he would like to run a few tests (just to be on the safe side) Mr. King would have those tests done. At no point would anyone ask him for payment because the primary consideration would be his medical condition. The questions asked would be about his health, what could be wrong with him, what would the appropriate treatment be. He would then receive that treatment.

As someone who has actually paid into the system I have no problem with this, I would be horrified if I thought that somebody was taken ill and wasn’t getting medical treatment the equal of the kind I would receive. I’d like to thank Mr. Moore for pointing this out to me, I never realized that here in the UK we do indeed have free health care.

My sweet and beautiful sister Katherine Turnbow Peil was my date for the ‘Sicko” premier in Seattle. She sent Michael Moore
a letter and he responded to her personally! This is so exciting that I have reprinted the letter here at ericturnbow.com
Subject: How about taking on religion next?

Hey Michael,
I had the honor and pleasure of screening Sicko in Seattle as the guest of
my brother, Eric Turnbow.

As an emotion theorist, I truly appreciate the theme I’ve seen running
through your films concerning how leaders use fear to gain control over
followers. So it struck me during Sicko, that you could do the world a huge
favor by taking on organized religion (albeit perhaps risking crucifixion –
but your kahoonies are already most impressive).

Many thanks for your good works, and for allowing Eric his 15 minutes. You
have long been a family hero! So feel free to call upon me any time you
might need an expert on the emotional system — and especially if you want to take on religion. Indeed, the emotional system underlies the innate spiritual impulse and a species wide moral compass -
but organized religion deeply interferes, hijacks and often negates the
innate self-regulatory wisdom our emotional system offers. Big hugs,
Katherine Turnbow Peil

Director, EFS International

Now here is Michael’s Personal Response To My Sister Katherines email inqirey!
Way to go Sis, and Thank You Michael for taking the time to answer us! (E.T.)

thank you katherine! i am so sorry security guys were rushing me out of the theater in seattle cause i really wanted to talk to you guys. so lets take a rain check on that. i always love coming to seattle.

though i don’t know Eric personally, i feel we are kindred spirits. all my buddies and me, we are like eric! and that is EXACTLY how we would have crossed abbey road!!

take care,

Michael
Rick Riley Working Musician 1/20/47 to 1/18/07

Frederick Riley Jan 20 1947 - Jan 18 2007
I’d like to reflect on the passing of a friend and musical icon, Rick Riley. I first met Rick on the Olympia waterfront at his ‘Virtuoso Studios’ about a decade and a half ago, …classic guitar in one hand and a piece by Bach in the other determined to learn from a local master. After ‘auditioning’ for him, he began teaching me, as he taught all of his students, …from the beginning. He taught his students more than just classic guitar performance: He taught music. His students learned to sight read and to write music, but they also learned how to perform as a professional would, in the practical sense of being a working musician. Rick embodied the term as he performed music by classical composers such as Villa Lobos, Bach, Sor, Vivaldi, or Mozart, yet also performed in Johnny Lewis’s jazz band. Eric Turnbow (E. T.’s Cosmic Karaoke owner) said of him… “I best remember Rick from playing in Variety bands with him in the early eighties. He used to perform and tutor our ‘Raging River Band’ back in 1983 on how to sing 4 part harmony, stage presence, music theory, and the business of music.” A musician all of his adult life, Rick took private lessons with notable instructors at the Peabody Conservatory of Music starting at the age of fifteen, including: Richard Phillips (Peobody graduate and student of Sophecles Papas and Andre’ Segovia), Michael Lawrence (Peabody graduate and student of Aaron Shearer) and Robert Luse (composer and classic guitarist.) In the time I knew him he continued to study his craft, having recently returned to Peabody to take a master class from Manuel Barrueco (perhaps the best performer of Bach on the classic guitar in the world.) Rick also performed as a one man band on the synth and his singing repetore’ included everything from the Beatles to ZZ Top. On occasion Rick would take a break from his world of music to go fly fishing, but normally he would be found in his studio helping others to someday reach his awsome status as a working musician. One can only expect he is now competing for ‘first chair’ guitarist in that band up in the sky.

My favorite D.J. of all time lives in Seattle and broadcasts in Seattle at KZOK Radio. Check this cool dude out! wrote a song for him called “Radio Man”, and it appears on my “I’m Alive’ cd. This is Steve’s Bio….

STEVE SLATON
Weekdays
2pm - 6pm
steve@kzok.com

Steve Slaton was born and raised in Tacoma. This fact alone may explain many things. In 1958 he cut his first tooth on the Chuck Berry 45 of “Johnny B. Goode”. A few years later a pre-teen Steve was influenced by cute teenage girls who lived down the street that were fawning over a new group from England called The Beatles. From that point forward it was all about rock n’ roll. Steve earned money to buy records from picking strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and beans in Fife, Puyallup and Sumner. An album cost $3.50. Steve was paid 2 cents a pound for picking blue lake green beans. Radio seemed like a better idea. And as $1.60 an hour to baby-sit an “Oceans of Beautiful music station” playing 1001 Strings doing versions of Beatle hits – it was.

While still a teenager, Steve became a popular disc jockey in Tacoma. This led to 19+ years at KISW and 15+ years at KZOK. In 1992 Time Magazine interviewed Steve and dubbed him “Regent of the Local Deejays”. Having never attended an institute of higher learning, Steve had no idea what “Regent” meant, but it sounded good.

Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, U2, and Pink Floyd are a few of Steve’s faves. He also loves a group he can’t name but their initials are AC/DC. Meeting Bob Dylan and interviewing Paul McCartney have been highlights. Steve’s show has resonated with discerning listeners for decades.

RADIO MAN
(dedicated to Steve Slayton of KZOK Radio.)
(Written by Eric Turnbow)

Radio man, help me belong
Show me what’s right, tell me what’s wrong
Oh radio man, don’t take too long
Or I’ll give up the tight, for the price at a song

Music makes the world go ’round
Dollar for dollar, pound for pound
So sing a sweet song when you know I’m down
Oh Radio man , wipe off this frown, wipe oft this
frown

Keep playing your music, don’t stop too soon
Radio rocket shoot me up to the moon
Oh Radio man, come on and keep me in tune
Come on and keep me in tune
(Repeat chorus)

A.M. F.M. whatever it takes
Crank up the music end keep me awake
Oh Radio man I dig the music you make,
I dig the music you make
A Flugle horn or a Bass Guitar
Maracas, piano, exotic sitar
Oh Radio man I think you’re a star, think you’re a
star
(Repeat chorus)

My radio’s blasting, mile after mile
Thanks to you brother I’m cruising in style
Oh Radio man, let’s rock for a while, let’s rock for a
while

Oh Radio man, keep on singing
I feel your vibrations, my ears are still ringing
You’re part of the plan, my Radio man, my Radio man
Yes you’re part of the plan, my Radio man,
my Radio man
Keep on, keep on giving,
so I’ll have reason to keep on living
You’re part of the plan
My Radio man, My Radio man
My Radio man, My Radio man

We just returned from the film event of the year, the Michael Jackson Documentary Film called “This Is It” directed by Kenny Ortega. If you like Michael Jackson You will love this movie. Great sound and fantastic to watch. It is true that at times his singing falls a tiny bit flat or short, but that is expected since it was a rehearsal and not the final show. They had to go with what they had. The editing in this movie is an absolute marvel. Very professional and painfully crafted like a fine wine. Overall it was a much better picture than I had anticipated. Extremely favorable from my viewpoint, as well as my dates opinion, Miriam Gash. It was nostalgic and personal. Obviously a big thumbs up!

The Imax Experience was totally worth the extra money! Normally here in Olympia it would cost $14.50 to see. WE had a coupon that saved us $1.50 on each ticket! Plus you can use a military discount. I must say the film was GREAT! Best movie of the year, for Me, and I have seen a lot of flicks this season. Michael is a genius, and the editing in this movie cannot be beat. And of course the music says it all! We got cool “Backstage Pass” Collectibles that hang around your neck as part of this big event. I kept my ticket stubs and put then in my Michael Jackson CD Booklets! It sort of felt like we were going to a live concert event or something! I hope this movie wins an award or three for documentary, editing, and whatever else would apply. It was amazing! Thumbs way up A plus for me. The only criticism I would have is that some of the shots are blurry and out of focus, then they cut to a sharp image that is really clear. I wish they discarded the blurry
shots and ran only with the clean ones for continuity, but all in all it really worked!

That said, go see this film. No one paid me to say this. Michaels mother Katherine, as well as his sisters are not going to see it. I cry foul on that one. They would love this as a memorial and a documentary that celebrates his life. His kids will see it soon by a private screening, and they can be damn proud of their Pop! we did notice that at certain times in the movie Michael looked as pale as a sheet, white, ghastly, and sometimes even creepy. These must have been the dates shot a couple days before he died and he was just a bit frail. But for the most part he was on top of his game and looked very good. Also, his energy levels change from one shooting day to another. Sometimes he is very active, and others rather passive. Either way this film brings out his creative and musical prodigy. I would watch it again! And crank it up will you! The music is never endingly good.

ET

Paul McCartney World Tour 2005 Seattle
November/3rd/2005

SET LIST:

8:25pm 20 minute DJ Disco Paul Mix. This set was very
clever with a DJ man playing a Re-mix of some
McCartney Classics, disco style. The graphics
on the screen were psychedelic with strobs and
color. Quite inventive. I want that CD!
8:55pm 10 minute movie narrated by Sir Paul. Good.
8:45pm Opener: Magical Mystery Tour (Paul on Hofner)
Flaming Pie (Paul pauses do “drink it all in”)
        Jet
I’ll Get You in the end (Paul set this song up
by saying “If you remember this song then
             you were not there).
Drive my car (Sang at Super bowl)
Till There was you (Ancient ca beret style)
Let Me Roll It (2 minute Hendrix jam at end
to Foxy Lady with Paul on his Les Paul)
Got to get you into my life
Fine Line (Paul on piano. Title Song
from new cd. Paul mentions he fell
into the piano pit on the 2nd night)
Maybe I’m Amazed (Classic live wings!)
Long and Winding Road (An Eric Fave)
Solo Guitar: The Living room set:
In Spite of all the Pain (1958 acetate with
the guys splitting the record fee! The
member kept it 23 years instead of
sharing it. He was to keep it for one
              week. This track is featured
              on Beatles Anthology)
Jenny Wren (New cd. in the style
                      “Blackbird”.
For No One(Paul on the piano with band)
          Fixing a Hole
English Tea (New cd, “Chaos and Creation
in the back yard”. Paul loves his
                   cup of tea.
Follow Me (New cd. Paul dedicated this
to his wife Heather and their 2
                    year old daughter, Beatrice!)
I’ll follow the sun (Old Beatle shocker)
          Bach Classical Guitar Piece (Acoustic)
Blackbird (Paul explains he wrote this
song adapted around that Bach piece)
          Eleanor Rigby
Too Many People (This was a hug highlight
from the first solo album! Paul on
                   Hofner Bass. Unexpected song)
She came in through the bathroom window
Good Day Sunshine (Paul explains they
woke up the space shuttle with this
track. Shows pictures of the shuttle)
         Band On The Run
         Penny Lane
I Got a Feeling! (Another unexpected
                         highlight! One of my faves)
         Back in the USSR
Hey Jude ( This required a lot of Crowd
                 participation. Paul directing)
10:55pm Live and let Die (Last official song.
special effects and fire and bangs
11:00p FIRST ENCORE: “Yesterday” Paul plays
the Epiphone guitar he used on
                    Ed Sullivan”.
11:05pm SECOND ENCORE: “Get Back”
11:10pm THIRD ENCORE: “Helter Skelter” (This
                    was a highlight! Rockin’!)
11:16pm FOURTH ENCORE: “Please please me”
                     Sound & unexpected. Short and
very sweet. Paul came out flying
                     a large American flag.)
11:20pm FIFTH ENCORE: “Let It Be” Good one.
                     with a Special painted piano!
11:25 SIXTH ENCORE: “Sargent Peppers
Reprise”
                      This was the perfect ending.
“We’re sorry but it’s time to go”
                FINAL ENCORE: “The end”.

This show was a whopping 2 hours and 40 minutes
with another 35 minutes of “Opening agenda”. It was by
far the best show I have seen by him, and I have
caught 4 other tours, 1976 Wings in the King dome,
1990
“Flowers in the dirt” Tour in the King dome, The
“Driving Rain” Tour in 2002 at the Tacoma Dome, and
the “USA Tour 2005″ to promote the new cd “Chaos and
Creation in the back Yard). I’m telling you, I was a
kid in a candy store and I thought I had died and gone
to heaven! Out of some 38 songs, 24 of them were
Beatles. He really looked and sounded great. Not a 63
year old at all in the least. He was pumped up and in
full spirits. I give this show the HIGHEST RATING I
possibly could. He pulled out all the stops. My thumb
is way, way up! You Go Paul! I will definitely try to
go see him again live if there is another tour in the
future. He is also, contrary to popular belief, very
HUMBLE! I kid you not. What a sense of humor as well.
He is welcome for dinner at my house anytime! He is a
strict veggie you know. But oh can he ever write
songs! That is his best gift! Sir Paul? You better
believe it! He ROCKS!

Magical musical tour: Youthful Paul McCartney rocks
KeyArena
By Patrick MacDonald

Seattle Times rock critic

Paul McCartney may be 63, but it didn’t show during
his concert Thursday night at KeyArena. “We have come
to rock you and rock you we will!,” he promised fans.

Who was that young man on the KeyArena stage singing
Beatles, Wings and Paul McCartney songs Thursday
night?

It couldn’t have been a 63-year-old man.

Paul McCartney looked remarkably young ? especially
following the wrinkly Stones, who played the same
place Sunday ? and sounded much the same as he did in
the Beatles, many years ago. He fit right in with the
four young guys in his band (the hair dye helped), and
had even more energy.

Compared to the Stones show, which featured whiz-bang
effects, including a stage that floated across the
room, McCartney’s performance emphasized music. The
staging was impressive, especially the massive, busy
lighting effects and creative use of video screens,
including giant ones behind the stage.

The bright lights often shone into the audience, which
seemed to unite McCartney with the fans. “Let me drink
this in,” he said, his eyes sweeping the whole packed
hall.

The generous, 36-song set included 24 Beatles songs,
highlights of Wings’ career and cuts from his solo
albums, including four from the new “Chaos and
Creation in the Backyard.”

He saluted the other Beatles, which got a standing
ovation. The set featured the first song they ever
recorded, “In Spite of All the Danger.” Perhaps as a
tribute to Seattle’s own Jimi Hendrix, McCartney, on
guitar rather than his usual bass, added a bit of
“Foxy Lady” to Wings’ “Let Me Roll It.”

Thursday night, KeyArena, Seattle The show opened with
a DJ spinning deconstructed, remixed McCartney songs
for 20 minutes, followed by an excellent 11-minute
film on McCartney’s life and career, with his own
narration.

McCartney and his four-piece band opened with “Magical
Mystery Tour,” as the entire crowd leaped to its feet.

He followed with the weird, obscure “Flaming Pie,” the
propulsive “Jet,” a sweet “I’ll Get You” and a song
McCartney noted he played at the Super Bowl in
February, “Drive My Car,” with speeding race cars on
the big screens.

“Hello, Sea-at-le,” McCartney said, promising a long
night of music. “We have come to rock you and rock you
we will!”

He wasn’t kidding.

Among songs that energized the big, multigenerational
crowd ? the two kids in front of me in $250 seats, who
couldn’t have been older than 12, were ecstatic ? were
“Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Fixing a Hole,” “Good Day
Sunshine,” “Band on the Run” and “Back In The
U.S.S.R.”

McCartney played piano on several songs, including a
moving “Hey Jude,” with his bandmates supplying fine
harmonies and the audience singing the “nah nah nah
nahs” with Sir Paul conducting.

The main set concluded with the big production number,
the bombastic ? literally, with booming pyro ? “Live
and Let Die.”

The two encores consisted of high-energy Beatles
songs. The first opened with his masterpiece,
“Yesterday,” and rocked with “Get Back” and “Helter
Skeeter.”

The second opened with the early Beatles’ “Please
Please Me,” followed by the wise “Let It Be,” and
ended with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and
“The End.”

McCartney mixes old and new to wow crowd

  MUSIC REVIEW
  PAUL MCCARTNEY

WHEN: Thursday night

WHERE: KeyArena

Paul McCartney, still slender and gorgeous at 63,
returned to the former Seattle Center Coliseum, now
KeyArena, for the first time since the Beatles’
hysteria-inducing performances of the mid-1960s.

With a four-member band led by keyboardist Paul “Wix”
Wickens and featuring lead guitarist Rusty Anderson,
McCartney led a capacity crowd — mature, but no less
enthusiastic than the screaming hordes of the ’60s –
on a celebratory journey through his musical past,
from the Beatles and Wings to songs from his new solo
album, “Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard.”

Scheduled to start at 8 p.m., the concert was delayed
by at least 30 minutes and began with a pre-show DJ
and 10-minute film on McCartney’s life and career,
from the bombing of London during World War II to the
recent Live 8 concerts. Dressed in black trousers,
turquoise shirt and black sport jacket, McCartney
launched the show with a boisterous “Magical Mystery
Tour,” the first of more than a dozen classic Beatles
songs. McCartney stuck to the 36-song set list
featured at other recent shows.

The show featured several songs at the piano and a
three-song acoustic set that began with the
’50s-sounding “In Spite of All the Danger,” the first
recording made by McCartney, John Lennon and George
Harrison in their pre-Beatles days. Among the best
songs from his new solo album was the somber,
sentimental “Jenny Wren,” which closed the short solo
set.

Wielding his trademark bass, Paul McCartney performs
at the KeyArena on Thursday night. The ex-Beatle got
the concert started with “Magical Mystery Tour” and
went on through an array of his hits, both with the
Fab Four and after, with some new songs sprinkled in.
View a gallery of concert photos.
McCartney played a vintage Hofner bass guitar, an
instrument featured on a number of older songs. For
his solo song “Flaming Pie,” six light clusters above
the stage appeared like space-age chandeliers. Above
the stage was a giant LED screen showing close-ups of
the band.

Behind McCartney, Wickens, Anderson, guitarist and
bassist Brian Ray, and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. was a
giant backdrop of video panels displaying animated
imagery and documentary footage.

“Greetings, Seattle,” McCartney cheerfully announced
before a spirited version of “Jet.”

“We have come for many miles to rock you tonight –
and we will.”

“Drive My Car” was accompanied by vintage films of
1950s dream cars. McCartney introduced the sentimental
“Till There Was You” as a “smooching song” from the
Beatles’ cabaret days. The song was accompanied by a
backdrop of clouds and blue sky. “Let Me Roll It”
featured a snippet of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.”

For “Fine Line,” the first song from his current solo
album, a piano rose from the stage floor, and
McCartney joked about falling into the hole on the
second night of the tour. Anderson induced the new
song by tossing a fortune cookie into the crowd, then
reading the fortune aloud: “Now is the time to try
something new.”

Another charming song from his current solo album was
the delicate, sentimental “English Tea,” accompanied
by an animated English garden scene complete with
oversize butterflies. The song featured the entire
band, except Anderson, who returned for the Beatles
song “I’ll Follow the Sun.”

“Blackbird,” “Eleanor Rigby” and “Good Day Sunshine”
were highlights of the show’s second hour. McCartney
proudly mentioned that “Sunshine” had been used last
summer to awaken NASA space shuttle astronauts. The
beautiful “Blackbird,” he explained, was adapted from
a J.S. Bach piece.

Pyrotechnics were featured on “Live and Let Die,”
which preceded the first encore of “Yesterday,” “Get
Back” and “Helter Skelter.”

The second encore began with “Please Please Me,”
continued with “Let It Be” (played on
psychedelic-themed upright piano topped by a candle)
and ended with a guitar-heavy version “Sgt. Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

The show ended at about 11:30 p.m. with a hail of thunderous
applause and ” A SPLENDID TIME WAS INDEED GUARANTEED FOR ALL!

So….

We all now that Pauli saved my master computer and restored it with Ubuntu. He went in through the back door with Ubuntu and was able to restore a dead in the water unit. I was frustrated, and ready to give up on all my 200,000 plus files and start over. That computer is essential to my overall business and especially my work doing private parties with Karaoke and DJ, which pay about $100 per hour or something. Without it I would be in the stone age and using discs exclusively. I do like to use cd’s though still. Pre-mixed tracks for weddings and special events work good, mixed with the computer allows me an option to program song lists and troubleshoot the PC while the cd plays on. So that Is, was, and will be…. way cool.EMAIL: Ubunto is my hero….

So….

We all now that Pauli saved my master computer and restored it with Ubuntu. He went in through the back door with Ubuntu and was able to restore a dead in the water unit. I was frustrated, and ready to give up on all my 200,000 plus files and start over. Without it I would be in the stone age and using discs exclusively. I do like to use cd’s though still. Pre-mixed tracks for weddings and special events work good, mixed with the computer allows me an option to program song lists and troubleshoot.

But now… Ta Da….. Ubuntu to the rescue again. I was hit by a Trojan virus on my lame vista home system. This thing was bad bad bad. I consulted with Paulie who was unable to get it fixed immediately. Then I called my friend Ollie who is very sharp and knows windows really well. He scanned and found multiple corrupt downloaded files with virus bullshit all through them using some special program which than deleted all the bad files. He tried for hours and hours, literally 7 hours or more to restore that stupid windows box, but to no avail. That is one nasty virus for sure! OUCH! We are still working up some kind of plan. (We may install a third operating system, an experimental new one made by Google). We will see. It would better to get a separate computer and just use Ubuntu on my main bill paying one. Because it is RELIABLE!

That all said and done…. it is Ubuntu to the rescue. Some time ago Paulie installed a second operating system, Ubuntu to operate in conjunction with windows. I simply rebooted to that system and I am able to access the internet, update my websites, check mail, surf, bank, and the works. IT HAS LITERALLY SAVED MY ASS. SO YOU CAN TELL YOUR Ubuntu CLASSES AND GROUPS MY STORY. IT HAS SAVED ME TWICE NOW. I TRULY love Ubuntu. IT IS VERY FAITHFUL. It is also very private and safe.

THAT SAID, I WOULD STILL LIKE SOME HELP LEARNING TO USE IT TO FULL CAPACITY. I AM FORCED TO USE IT EXCLUSIVELY RIGHT NOW, SO I WANT TO LEARN LEARN, LEARN! maybe A SESSION OR TWO WITH PAULIE OR CHUCK OR SOMEONE THAT KNOWS THEIR SHIT. PLENTY OF FOOD TIPS AND LOTS OF SMOKING AND STUFF WILL BE INVOLVED, I ASSURE YOU! SO NOW I AM A TRUE BELIEVER IN Ubuntu. IT JUST SEEMS TO WORK, WORK, WORK, WITH NO VIRUSES OR BULLSHIT. OLD FAITHFUL. i EVEN FIGURED OUT HOW TO UPLOAD MYSPACE PICTURES! Oh and the editor and spell checker that I love so much works like a charm in Ubuntu. When I used the emergency stand by windows in the safe mode, designed to get you to Microsoft long enough to give them more money for bogus licenses, yes’ I was able to check mail and stuff to a small extent until they kick you off. But the editor and spell checker were disabled. In Ubuntu they are all there. So I am a true believer now, and wish to voice my complimentary approval of this
operating system, and spread the word to theres. Microsoft sucks, and the costumer service is the worst. The worms and viruses are atrocious. Long live Ubuntu! I am a fan.

So now, my question would be how do I download my Kodak pictures while windows is tits? Does gimp do it? Could we install the Kodak software on Ubuntu since I am familiar with it? Also… what about ripping? I love my cdg ripper program Tim set me up with. I want to continue to use it. Will it work with Ubuntu? It is essential for upgrading my business catalog that I rip all the new cd’s both Karaoke and regular DJ music. I buy new stuff all the time as part of my tax write offs and customer requests. Will it do it? If not maybe another program could be recommended that works well with this operating system?

Thanks….

See everyone soon. Tell the classes about my story. You can read this email to them if you want. Ubuntu has saved my ass!

Grip is what I use for ripping audio CDs. But whatever you use make sure you can use LAME as it’s engine. Set LAME to the “insane” MP3 compression level for 320mhz rips with 2 separate stereo channels. The files wind up a little bigger than other MP3 files but I have never, ever had a song ripped with any audio artifacts(whistling or worse) using LAME set this way.

Don’t know about Kodak’s method of download, but unless they incorporate DRM on some level, it should be an automatic process.

One very common thing that people coming from a windows environment have to get used to is that there is very often no program that you must use to do any specific task. It is likely that the environment itself will indicate options and ask you what you want done…or that many applications have similar functionality.

Anji likes F-Spot, it is a lot like the mac image viewer I am told…but I like G-Thumb. It is so much simpler, but is also has less bell/whistles.

If you want to learn about stuff, pay Paulie or Chuck or just come to the bi-weekly learners class bro. Tuesdays from 7-9.

Tried the grip on Erics Ubuntu, not sure what happened, but after picking the mp3 options, it ripped the CD into wav files.

After consulting with Eric, he wanted mp3 files. Then I suggested using Sound-Juicer which I had installed with his ubuntu system many months ago. Story has been told about his Vista adventures.

I will continue to try to set up grip, but as of now, Eric is using Sound-Juicer and is loving it.

Ripping CDs to MP3 is best with anything that fronts for LAME. I use GRIP, mainly because it exposes it’s internals pretty much completely. Set LAME for it’s ‘insane’ ripping mode and you will never hear any sound artifacts when a song goes from very quiet to full-on loud as can be in one beat. It’s awesome, and only takes another 30% or so of space to do it.

Dave,

exactly what settings do you set in grip for insane quality? I installed it, and poked thorough the encoder settings for lame, but everything was console based settings wrapped in the gui, with no obvious method to change the bitrate, whether numerically or “insane”, etc.
I’ve seen reference to insane in lame before; I understand what you mean but just don’t see that in grip.

This is why I stick to kaudiocreator; I can specify MP3 encoding (lame) to 320 vbr and get great results.

Post your grip lame settings, please

Sound Juicer uses the gstreamer0.8-lame package for encoding, whereas Grip uses the lame package. It could be that these are just what happen to be used in the tutorials I found - can anyone confirm whether Sound Juicer can use the lame package or Grip can use the gstreamer0.8-lame package? An explanation of the difference between all the different lame packages would be great.

mode=0 -m stereo (change to mode=1 for joint stereo)
vbr=4 –vbr-new (use new vbr algorithm)
vbr-quality=0 -V 0 (use highest vbr quality , 9 is lowest)
quality=0 -q 0 (use highest quality encoding algorithm)

hopefully the rest are self-explanatory. I hope this helps someone.

Can anyone contribute anything about cdrip???????
Should I give it a another chance?

Using MP3 for archiving is of course not the absolute best due to the fact that even with the very best encoder a ‘lossy’ format will result in only a close approximation of the original waveform. Of course it can be very, very, very close…just not ever equal.

My car stereo only does MP3 and WMA, while my doctored thumbdrive player does OGG as well. So I typically use MP3 formate ripped at insane for my archiving so I can use it in any player I may need in the future.

–preset insane

Is the flag you would insert into GRIP or anything that uses LAME. Following is the blurb barely explaining the command line flags.

=====

–preset presetName use built-in preset

Use one of the built-in presets (standard, fast standard, extreme, fast extreme, insane, or the abr/cbr modes).
“–preset help” gives more information about the usage possibilities for these presets.

=====

Likely the functionality in GStreamer produces similar results. Just a matter of what one is used to.

Dave,

I really appreciate the information. And when time frees up, I will research it. All great for techies (Like most of us here).

On the other hand, Eric is a home user, and I feel that when showing most users the command line (I feel) makes them want to run back to other Platforms.

I am providing SIG’s, etc, to help demonstrate to the general desktop user how useful the new GNU/Linux Distros Desktop Manager like Gnome is. People are loving it. Instead of working with only one user/student, we work as a group, use projectors, shared networking, etc, so everyone feels that they are a part of what is going on. Only place in Olympia (that I am aware) that this type of presentation is being used today. Mostly with Ubuntu. Works great on latest greatest systems.

Eric wanted to express his happyness and got the chance to do so. I am hoping not to scare him away. He knows that mp3 format works on his car radio (USB Flash device option) which his significant other gave him at christmas time.

I demostrated grip for him (because of your great input), but he did not like it. He be a happy camper with sound-juicer. That is all there is to it.

Sorry
Pauli

P.S. Thank you Chuck for your visual examples

Don’t apologize man, if he’s using Free Software he’s on the right track and that is what counts. Grip is beta software. Very powerful because of all the engines it can use and options that can be set in them, but it is confusing to set up for the first time. It is not the only solution, or even the best, just a powerful one for those that can wrap their heads around it.
